Mayor on Yatim shooting: "I'm very sorry what happened"

The mayor of Toronto has spoken for the first time about the shooting death of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim, since he was gunned down by police on a streetcar.

The incident happened on Dundas St near Bathurst St early Saturday morning.

While campaigning with PC candidate Ken Kirupa in Etobicoke this afternoon, mayor Rob Ford was asked about the shooting.

"We're talking about a huge election coming up on Thursday and I can't address what happened a couple of nights ago," Ford said. "It's unfortunate. It's sad. My heart goes out to the family.

"But none of us know all the facts."

FORD confirms participation in 2014 DAKAR

Ford Ranger entry built and designed in South Africa through collaborative global effort

PRETORIA, South Africa, 29 July, 2013 -Team Ford Racing has confirmed it will enter two South African-built Ford Rangers in the gruelling 2014 Dakar, taking place from 05 18 January 2013 in South America.

The design team responsible for bringing Fords Dakar contender to fruition includes a mix of South African and global minds. The purpose-built Ford Rangers are being prepared by Pietermaritzburg-based Neil Woolridge Motorsport while logistics will be handled by German-based South Racing. Similarly the driver line-up is made up of both international and local contenders including South American native Lucio Alvarez and South African Chris Visser.

We are extremely proud to be sending these South African-built Rangers to the 2014 Dakar, says Jeff Nemeth President and CEO of Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. Dakar is the ultimate test of man and machine and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to participate with a phenomenal team comprised of local and global expertise.

Over 1-billion TV viewers from across the globe tuned in to watch the 2013 Dakar with 4.6 million spectators making their way to South America to witness the feat.

The Dakar is a truly international showcase of Off Road machinery. Last year 745 competitors participated, representing 53 nationalities. We are pleased to have put together a global team that represents exceptional knowledge of the event as well as the Ford Ranger, which is built at the Silverton Assembly Plant in Silverton says Dave Schoch Group Vice President and President, Asia Pacific.

Global collaboration

The newly designed Ford Rangers were built in Pietermaritzburg with assistance from Ford Motor Companys Global Product Developments division. Every aspect of the new Ranger has been carefully considered and built with precision and performance in mind.

A complex jigging system was used in the manufacturing process in order to ensure that each part is built as per the design in order to achieve the perfect fit on every vehicle built explains Neil Woolridge, Team Manager. Although the two new Rangers are locally built we received tremendous support from our global counterparts including the likes of Fords SVT division.

The technical aspects of the project will be managed from the NWM workshops in Pietermaritzburg and this will continue to be the main headquarters for the project. One of the two FIA Ford Rangers is already complete and will start testing this August. The second is under construction with planned completion at the end of October. They will be supported by a dedicated team of 24 full time staff in their quest for the top honours in the Dakar battle.

The logistics and European operations are being managed by South Racing GmbH, based near Frankfurt, Germany. South Racing is owned and managed by Scott Abraham whose family has a long history in South African motorsport, his father Arthur was a stalwart of South African motorsport for several decades. Abraham has been based in Europe for the past ten years during which time he has worked as team manager for X-raid BMW/MINI and Overdrive Toyota. He was integral to the launch of the Toyota Dakar project and thus has a wealth of relevant knowledge and experience.

South Racing will be supplying the team logistic structure including the MAN 6X6 Service Trucks, MAN T4 Race Trucks and service equipment. In addition to the vehicles and equipment South Racing will manage all logistic and administration requirements for the team including the relationship with ASO.

The combination of NWM and South Racing will ensure that the project has the necessary expertise and depth to be able to deliver the results, explains Abraham.

Competitive driver and navigator line-up

Lucio Alvarez and Ronnie Graue have been confirmed as the first driver crew. They are part of the younger generation of drivers coming through the sport and have delivered impressive results on previous runnings of the Dakar. In their first outing in 2011 they finished 17th overall, in 2012 they managed to finish in an impressive fifth place while in 2013 they were lying third overall before mechanical problems dropped them down to 27th place. They demonstrated their determination and abilities by fighting their way back up to tenth position at the finish.

The second Ford Ranger will be crewed by South African Cross Country competitors Chris Visser and navigator Japie Badenhorst. Both are well known in South African motorsport having won the 2011 South African Cross Country Championship. The pair is currently leading the 2013 Donaldson South Africa National Cross-country championship. This will be their first time competing on the Dakar.

Gruelling test of man and machine

The 2014 Dakar Rally will be the 35th running of the event and the sixth successive running in South America.

The 2014 Dakar Rally Route is sure to be as trying as ever. The event will start in Rosario, Argentina on January 5 and finish in Valparaiso, Chile on January 18 after thirteen stages of competition, which will comprise a total distance of over 8,500 kilometres.

This year the Dakar Rally is continuing its exploration of the Andes regions by incorporating a visit to Bolivia for the first time. No doubt that this challenging stage will test the off-road endurance qualities of the drivers and teams.

There is much work to be done in the coming months. The Dakar is no small under taking but we have an exceptional team of hardworking and dedicated individuals who will be working round the clock in the coming months in preparation for the start of the Dakar early in the new year, concludes Schoch.

Ford fans will be able to keep track of the teams progress in the lead up to the event as well as follow the teams progress during the 2014 Dakar on Ford South Africas Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, join the conversation by using #FordDakar.

Celebrities might get a lot of love from fans on social networking sites but they get the same amount of hate as well. Like Ariana Grande, Jai Brooks of ?The Janoskians? gets a fair amount of hate. Yet, it looks as if the fan hate was too much for Grande?s boyfriend to bear that he had to resort to quitting the social networking site, Twitter. ...

Home Improvement Hero Challenge - Max and Mummy

Money Supermarket recently set some bloggers a challenge to improve a part of their home with a budget of ?50. With money becoming tighter for most, being thrifty with your money is always handy, especially when it comes to home improvements.?

I am the worst when it comes to starting projects and never finishing them. The amount of crafty things I attempt and then realise that I'm rubbish at it is ridiculous so I wanted to do something that meant I could prove to myself and everyone else that I was capable of finishing a project!

We live in a rented property so didn't really want to do anything too invasive to the structure/walls. Our living room is a tiny room that we eat, play and study in so we wanted to make this more liveable. Here are some before pictures:

As you can see, the place is tiny and cramped and doesn't leave much to the imagination. We knew that we wanted to have a proper place for Max's toys to go so we found a toy storage unit in Argos (?20). Whilst all his toys are on show it means that we can keep an eye on how much stuff he has out and also he can help us tidy away at the end of the day. Our sofa looks a bit worse for wear with dodgy cushions and things strewn all over it so we pulled it apart and evened out the padding in the seats then found some gorgeous duck egg blue cushions (?6) and a chocolate brown throw (?11). I also moved the brown box next to the sofa to use as a storage unit/side table.

I took Max's table and bought some red (his colour choice) spotted material (?3 per metre - 1 metre bought). It's the oilcloth style so it can be wiped down. I stuck it to his table and chairs with spray adhesive (?3) so that they looked a tad more colourful and neater. The plain white looked tired and dirty whereas this makes it fun for him to eat dinner.?

I stuck up some book related postcards I got from work (?2) on the wall near his table so that he can sit on his armchair and read a book. I stuck this on using washi tape (?1), it looks a bit messy so I will probably stick it down in a neater way in the future.

I found a wicker basket in a charity shop (?1.50) which we can put magazines, remotes and anything else in there.

And finally I used an old jam jar, used the washi tape from earlier and some scrap wallpaper to create a pencil pot for Max's pencils. I also bought some carpet gripping tape for the rugs so they would stay still (?1)

I really feel like even though I didn't do anything invasive to the property I did manage to give the room a complete overhaul to make it look nicer and feel more homely for our uses. Max and Scott are chuffed and I'm proud of what I've managed to do in such a small space!

Overall I spent:

?48.50 exactly. Well about ?48.41 when I considered that most things were rounded up to the pound from a .99p! It made the maths a lot easier.

Thank you Money Supermarket for hosting this challenge I think we can give thumbs up all round! I definitely now know that I can stretch a budget and finish a project!

Like GM, bankruptcy can only help Detroit - Automotive News

Rick Wagoner said bankruptcy could spell the end for General Motors, because people wouldn't buy cars from a bankrupt automaker.

But GM ultimately did go bankrupt, and people still bought its cars. Four years later, GM is riding high again, posting healthy sales increases and generating billions of dollars in profits.

A quick trip through bankruptcy court let the company finally rid itself of the debt, legacy costs and other burdens that had been slowly crushing it for decades. Now, any problems it runs into can be blamed on the current management, rather than on short-sighted decisions made back when CEO Dan Akerson was a lieutenant on the U.S.S. DuPont and Mark Reuss was in junior high.

Today, the ominous clouds of bankruptcy have returned to the Motor City, but this time GM only has to watch (and it has a prime seat, inside the tallest building in town). Detroit, a city that has suffered nearly a half century of misfortune, mismanagement and mistreatment, has become the largest municipal bankruptcy case in history.

Finally.

As with GM in 2009, this is a day that has been a long time coming -- one of the bleakest days ever for a city that has had plenty of them. Yet it should not even slightly surprise anyone who has ever lived in, worked in, visited or heard a late-night punch line about Detroit.

As with GM, the longer Detroit stayed out of bankruptcy, the longer it would have to wait for a more prosperous future on the other side.

"GM is proud to call Detroit home and today's bankruptcy declaration is a day that we and others hoped would not come," the automaker said in a statement after the city's Chapter 9 filing this afternoon. "We believe, however, that today also can mark a clean start for the city. We hope that all parties recognize the sacrifices to follow can help rebuild a stronger Detroit with a level of services and quality of life its citizens deserve. A healthy auto industry will play a part in Detroit's comeback story and GM is doing its part."

GM said it does "not anticipate any impact to our daily operations or business outlook."

Despite the concerns of Wagoner, the former CEO who was eventually forced out, GM's customers didn't abandon it during bankruptcy because GM was, for all intents and purposes, already bankrupt long before its high-priced lawyers filed the formal paperwork.

Detroit was running on fumes long before its emergency financial manager arrived in March. Its former mayor is in federal prison for corruption. Its former city council president recently got out of prison, and its most recent one hasn't been seen for weeks. Its overworked police officers are rewarded for working 12-hour shifts with smaller paychecks. Many streetlights don't work. Tens of thousands of homes and buildings are vacant, and vast swaths of entire blocks are now barren.

Basically, bankruptcy can only help Detroit. In that way, this is good news for GM, the many auto suppliers located here and just about everyone else with any connection to Detroit -- except, of course, those who earn their paychecks from city hall or hold any of its debt.

It comes amid many positive signs that understandably get overshadowed by the city's grim list of problems. Streets and sidewalks in the central business district are more crowded than they've been in a long time, and workers at a growing number of companies that recently uprooted themselves from bland suburban office parks can be seen during lunch hour relaxing at a newly created beach right in the middle of downtown. Just the other day, I discovered that the overgrown lot and abandoned warehouse where I and a group of reporters camped out during the UAW's contract talks with GM in 2007, is the site of brand-new senior apartments.

GM, after a scary but mercifully brief stint in bankruptcy, knows how surprisingly refreshing and reinvigorating the process can be. Hopefully, Detroit soon will, too.

It just has to suffer through a brief period of negative national publicity, uncertainty and endless jokes first -- you know, things it already has been enduring for generations. That's nothing new, but the opportunity for the city to finally get better would be.

Charlie Ford Vintage

Hello friends! I'm sorry once again for my lack of posts. Unfortunately i've been sick all week, so it's been quite difficult to get out of bed and do anything productive. Since i've been absent for the majority of the week, i'm going to be doing two posts today (i'll post the room of the week later this afternoon). Until then, i'm very excited to share this first post with you guys! I've always been a big fan of The Bachelor/The Bachelorette series and I pride myself on picking the top people on the first night (haha it's quite a talent). The second I saw Jillian Harris she was instantly my favourite, mainly because she was an Interior Designer, Canadian, and had a great sense of style. As the season progressed she remained my favourite and I was more than thrilled when I found out she was going to be The Bachelorette. I've since followed her on Extreme Makeover Home Edition, and Love It or List It Vancouver. She's definitely one of my girl crushes! I couldn't wait when I found out that she and business partners Tori Wesszer and Alyssa Dennis were starting an online home decor store, Charlie Ford Vintage (is that name not perfect!?). The first time I went on the site I instantly got Vintage One Kings Lane vibes. Everything is organized so well, and I love the simple, feminine layout. I also love how they have A LOT of variety. To be honest, I didn't think they would have a ton to choose from just because it's such a new business, but there are lots of beautiful pieces for every single area of your home. It's also great because the pieces are truly one of a kind. While I do love big chains that sell fabulous products, it's the unique, one of a kind pieces that really make your house a home. Check it out!?

On a side note, i'm desperately needing to change the look of my blog a bit so if anyone knows any talented graphic designers in the Winnipeg area that are good with blog/logo design please contact me at samschriemer@gmail.com. Thanks!?

Tina Turner weds longtime partner in Switzerland

Music legend Tina Turner tied the knot with longtime German partner Erwin Bach in Switzerland.

Reports of the wedding have come from global news agency AFP, as well as Reuters, which received confirmation of the nuptials from Swiss municipal official Hannes Fress.

Turner, 73, and record executive Bach, 57, held the civil ceremony at their home by Lake Zurich in Kusnacht, in northern Switzerland "a few days ago," Fress said.

The Swiss media has also been reporting details of the newlyweds' upcoming celebration of their union, though confirmation remains sketchy. Reported details include that the couple will hold a star-studded Buddhist ceremony on Sunday with 120 invited guests ? including David Bowie, Sade and Oprah Winfrey ? all of whom have been requested to wear white.

Turner, who became a Swiss citizen in April, will allegedly wear a Giorgio Armani gown.

Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock in Tennessee, earned her fame beginning in the early 1960s with hits like "Nutbush City Limits" and "Proud Mary." She continued well into the 1980s and 1990s as a hitmaking solo artist with tunes like "Private Dancer" and "We Don't Need Another Hero." She moved to Switzerland in 1995 when Bach was transferred to the country.

Before her relationship with Bach began in the mid-1980s, Turner was famously married to her musical partner Ike Turner for 14 years.

She left him in 1976 after suffering serious domestic abuse, as detailed in her autobiography "I, Tina," and alluded to in her 1984 hit "What's Love Got To Do With It."

Tina Turner retired from the public eye after a final tour in 2008/2009.
